6 things you need to know about re-routing water pipes in Canberra and Queanbeyan.

  1. The term re-route means taking an alternative route.
  2. When residential buildings are constructed, the plumber will install the long hot and cold water pipe runs under the concrete slab. These long runs connect the kitchen, bathrooms and laundry to the main hot and cold water supplies. Over time, these pipes can begin to leak or burst. We have found that while the pipe can be repaired, the chances of another leak occurring again in the section of pipe are high, and the cost of cutting through and repairing floors and floor coverings can be astronomical. That is why we recommend re-routes for leaking pipes under slabs.
  3. Before the re-route we determine which section is leaking and where the connecting T joints are in the walls. We use electronic locating equipment and mini-probe cameras to locate these pipes.
  4. During the re-route we replace the leaking section of pipe under the slab with a new insulated pipe that we install in the walls and above the ceilings. We have become so experienced at this that we normally need only 2-3 holes. These holes in the walls are no larger than 300mm x 300mm.
  5. In some cases, re-routing leaking and burst pipes is not so simple. During the late 1960s and early 1970s, plumbers were installing all the T-joints under the slabs. In these houses, we have no choice but to dig into floors and walls. Re-routes are possible; however, they are extremely expensive.
  6. The downside of rerouting water pipes is that it attracts mice and rats (if you have that problem). When poisoned, mice and rats will chew through metal pipes to reach water. Therefore, if you are putting out mouse and rat poison in your roof spaces, put a bowl of water nearby.
