What you need to know about detecting water leaks in Canberra and Queanbeyan.
When owners suspect a water leak, they call us. Before we start looking for a water leak (leak locating)we need to determine whether there is actually a leak (leak detection) or not. We were once called to find leaking pipes for an elderly lady in Canberra’s South. Our investigations led us to a radio that was turned on but not tuned in.
We do a number of things to determine whether a leak exists and what form it takes.
To start, we check the water meter to see if water is flowing through it. We conduct pressure tests, review your water bills, and compare them with previous bills from the corresponding quarters.
We check your plumbing, evaporative cooling, drainage and irrigation systems. We check whether your last water meter reading was an actual reading or an estimate. It is only after we determine that you have a water leak that we move on to the next steps: calculating the size of the water leak and the Water Leak Locating process.

5 other things you need to know about water leak detecting
- Not all water meter readings are actual readings. It is our understanding that only one in 4 need to be accurate. That means 3 out of 4 water bills can be based on estimates. When you get a high ICON water bill, ask ICON or QCC if it was based on an actual reading or an estimate.
- As water meters age, they can fail. If you get a high water bill, ask ICON or QCC to test your water meter for accuracy.
- Before you call us, check all of your toilets and taps. A leak of just 1 litre per minute will result in 130,000 litres wasted over 90 days.
- If, for some reason, we are unable to help, when you call another plumber, ask if they have their own water leak detecting and locating equipment. If they do not, find someone who does. This will save you a lot of time and money.
- Experience tells us that your insurance company will pay for leak-locating costs if you have had a loss as a result of a prior leak. Insurers usually pay for search and discovery, and for making good of any part of your building that has been damaged as a result of the leak or of looking for the leak. Check with your insurer first.
